In doing our daily reading and research on what is going in the world of trash / garbage, I ran across a joyful article about garbage collectors in Turkey.  They have been collecting books that Turkish citizens had been throwing out. Rather than throwing the books into the landfill, they would collect them for their own reading initially — creating a library for themselves and their families.  Being resourceful.

The book collection became large enough that it was not only useful for colleagues and their families, but also useful for the general public.  The book collection, that continues to grow, is now a public library, and is housed in one of the buildings at the sanitary department.

From an entrepreneurship researcher’s perspective (John’s “day job” is a professor at St. Edward’s University in Austin), this is an excellent example of how an entrepreneur (entrepreneurs in this case) connect supply with demand in the marketplace.  A specific quote in the article from one of the garbage collectors exemplifies this:
